Raw and riveting, Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower will remind you of that magical moment your life when you were truly infinite. The book universally captures the high school experience in a way that hasn’t been done in a long time. However, as he tries to navigate his new life, he can’t help but feel a pull to his past, a secret he can’t exactly grasp. There’s also a healthy dose of sex, drugs, rock and roll, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. His poignant letters, a cry out for someone to listen, are filled with new friends, first dates, family drama, bigotry, and loss. Through a series of letters to an unnamed friend, fourteen year-old Charlie chronicles his journey as a high school freshman dealing with adolescence as a “wallflower” watching it all. A coming-of-age story that has become a cult classic, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is another one of my high school AP English discoveries, and it has remained one of my top five favorites for years.
